As the leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, we’re drawn outdoors to witness the beauty of fall. This Sunday, both our youth group and our 20s and 30s group will be hiking at Great Falls Park, each group setting out separately to experience the wonder of God’s creation. There's something incredibly moving about taking time to walk through nature, especially in this season when creation itself seems to echo God’s artistry in every tree and leaf.
Hiking offers a unique opportunity to pause, reflect, and be present, not only with God but with each other. Scripture encourages us to find joy in creation and connection. Psalm 19:1 reminds us, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." When we walk in nature, we can see God’s fingerprints in every living thing. Each step we take is a reminder that we are part of something greater, something intricately designed and lovingly crafted.
Hiking and Our Connection with God
Being out in the woods or along a river trail allows us to let go of daily distractions. In the cool air, as we breathe in the earthy scent of fallen leaves and hear the crunch of footsteps on the trail, we become more open to hearing God’s voice. Nature invites us to marvel at God’s handiwork and reflect on the Creator who made it all. As we walk among the trees, noticing the vibrant fall colors, we are reminded of God’s presence and faithfulness. Each leaf that changes color and falls to the ground is part of a cycle, a rhythm God designed, and it reminds us of the beauty that comes with change.
Consider the words of Psalm 104:24, which says, “How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” On the trail, we get a glimpse of God’s wisdom and creativity in every living thing. From the towering trees to the rivers that carve their way through rock, we witness how God’s creation thrives in harmony. In these moments, we’re encouraged to trust God with our own lives, remembering that He cares for all He has made, including us.
The Blessing of Connecting with Others
Hiking with others is also a way to connect more deeply. This is a chance to explore and grow in community with people at a similar stage of life. For our youth group, this outing is a time to laugh, explore, and build friendships rooted in faith. For our 20s and 30s group, the hike is a refreshing way to break from routine, find peace in nature, and build lasting connections.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” Whether we're hiking together or in separate groups, the friendships and support we find in these moments are part of the journey God calls us to share.
A Prayer for Our Time in Nature
As we prepare for our hikes, let’s carry this prayer in our hearts:
Most good and gracious God, we thank you for the beauty of this season. Thank you for each vibrant tree, each cool breeze, and each step on the path that leads us closer to You. Open our hearts to see You in the beauty around us and to feel Your presence in the friendships we share. May our time in nature be a reminder of Your goodness, and may our connection with one another bring joy and encouragement. Amen.
This Sunday, as each group walks through the trails and marvels at the fall colors, may they draw near to God, find strength in community, and experience the peace that only God can give.
