“Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have” -Jim Rohn
This quote has been true for me time and time again.
Growing up in the church, I was taught by my family and in Sunday School that it was important to give generously. I would save and give $2 of my allowance to the church every week because that was one way my parents taught me to give.
It wasn’t until I got older and grew into my faith that I fully understood the impact that my donations could have. With my transition into adulthood, I have continued to give generously to the church. I made it a regular routine and even set up automated donations online so I couldn’t forget. When I hear stories of how our church impacts the local community by paying an electric or medical bill or providing a safe place for children and adults to meet for important work like All Ages Read Together, Scouts, or Alcoholics Anonymous, I am reminded how our donations are constantly working to further God’s kingdom. These acts of generosity and kindness would not be possible if the funds were not provided.
Also, tithing is not simply just a monetary donation, it is also the generous gift of our time and talents. These acts of generosity have been as equally important to me and rewarding as my monthly financial gifts to St. Matthew's. Volunteering to help set up/break down a church event, tellering, coffee hour or going on a mission trip have all brought more joy into my life than what I gave. Giving my time and talent in these ways allows me to meet new people and make great connections that turn small moments into life-long friendships.
I may not always feel like I have time to give, but every time I do I am filled with an indescribable joy, the joy of sharing God’s Love with those around me. Life truly is better when I am generous.
Sincerely,
Emily Palmer
